Perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and loaded with gooey, melted cheese, this bread is a savory delight that pairs perfectly with any meal or can be enjoyed on its own.

Notes

  • total prep time: 15-20 minutes
  • total cook time: 12-15 minutes
  • Makes 6-8 servings
  • Best served immediately while cheese is hot and gooey

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking sheet
  • Double boiler or bain-marie (medium pot with water and smaller pot/bowl on top)
  • Knife for slicing bread
  • Mixing spoon
  • Pastry brush (optional, for spreading cheese mixture)

Ingredients

All ingredients are adjustable as to quantity; substitute your favorite cheese to suit your tastes.

  • 1 loaf of crusty French or Italian bread (either sliced or halved lengthwise)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 4 oz goat cheese (I used a honey-infused goat cheese)
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tablespoon pre-minced garlic)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons white wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian herb blend, plus more for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prep your bain-marie or set up your double boiler with a small pot of water to boil with an empty pot on top.
  3. Place cheeses, butter, garlic, and white wine into the top vessel and heat until it's melted, stirring occasionally to combine. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Spread cheese mixture onto your bread, making sure to get it into all the nooks and crannies.
  5. Sprinkle with additional herbs if desired.
  6. Place bread on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, until the edges are crispy and the cheese is bubbly and starting to brown.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool for 1-2 minutes before serving.

Tips & Variations

  • Add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a spicy kick
  • Try different cheese combinations like cheddar, parmesan, or fontina
  • Brush the bread with olive oil before adding the cheese mixture for extra richness
  • Add sun-dried tomatoes or olives to the cheese mixture for Mediterranean flair
  • For extra garlic flavor, roast the garlic before adding it to the cheese mixture
  • Serve with marinara sauce for dipping

Enjoy this indulgent, cheesy treat that's sure to disappear quickly!
